OpenBridge 6.1 Released: Maritime industry unites behind open-source standard for maritime workplaces.

OSLO, NORWAY – OpenBridge today announced the release of OpenBridge 6.1, a major milestone marking the end of the platform's beta period. This latest update to the open-source design system signal that OpenBridge is now fully mature and ready for professional, large-scale deployment in the maritime and ocean industries.

As maritime operations become increasingly digitized, the industry has long struggled with inconsistent, fragmented user interfaces that complicate training and compromise safety. OpenBridge 6.1 solves this by providing a unified, industry tested design standard. This release is not merely an update; it is a signal to the industry that OpenBridge has evolved from a research initiative into a production-ready ecosystem.

OpenBridge now includes content supporting most maritime and industrial needs, ranging from SCADA to navigation systems for environments such as ship bridges, remote operation centers, factory floors, offices, and control rooms.

A Massive Leap in Functionality

Version 6.1 is the result of extensive feedback from the global OpenBridge community and industry partners. The release creates a more robust foundation for designers, featuring:

  • Extended UI Component Library: All the components required to create modern industrial user interfaces.
  • Dashboard Support: Graphs, bars, and a wide range of data display components.
  • AR, Video, and CCTV: Ready for advanced information overlays for video on screens, window displays, or HMDs (Head-Mounted Displays).
  • Standard Compliant: Supports a wide range of standards such as IEC 62288, ISA 101, and WCAG.
  • Icons: Support for the 1,800+ icons in the OpenBridge icon library.
  • Instruments: A massive selection of instruments ranging from thrusters and compasses to depth meters and attitude indicators, covering a wider range of vessel technologies and new vehicle types such as ROVs and drones.
  • System-Wide Polish: A complete overhaul of existing sections to ensure consistency and ease of use.
  • Energy-Saving UI: Integrated support for advice indications on most components and new support for wind propulsion.
  • Reference Designs: A range of documentation files demonstrating how to design OpenBridge applications.
  • Figma Integration: Deep integration of OpenBridge into Figma, the world-leading platform for interaction design.

Becoming an open Industry Standard

Adoption of OpenBridge is accelerating rapidly. During the last Nor-Shipping event, OpenBridge content was observed on 22 stands. Leading vendors such as Brunvoll, JRC, SEAM, Maritime Robotics, and many others are paving the way for an industry standard.

“Brunvoll recognizes that a recognizable and unified operator environment across vessels, products, and suppliers makes everyday life for the crew both easier and safer. That is why we have chosen to use OpenBridge on the displays for our control systems,” says Frode Bloch, EVP Engineering Control & Electrical at Brunvoll.

Supported by a consortium of over 40 partners, OpenBridge is fast becoming the de facto standard for maritime UI.

"OpenBridge has been in development for eight years, and version 6.1 represents our most mature and comprehensive release to date. We are deeply grateful to our community for their invaluable support in refining the system," said Professor Kjetil Nordby, Leader of OpenBridge. "What began as a tool for ship bridges has evolved to cover the entire spectrum of maritime operations, from machine rooms to remote control centers."

Availability and Roadmap

The OpenBridge 6.1 Figma design files are available immediately and remain free and open source for everyone. While this release focuses on the design toolkit, OpenBridge has also announced that a major update to the open-source code libraries is scheduled for March. This will further streamline the workflow, allowing developers to implement the 6.1 designs with pixel-perfect accuracy.
